The Cure Alzheimer's Funds' Dr. Rudy Tanzi recently gave a major address at the NIH Director's esteemed lecture series on his groundbreaking research on Alzheimer's. The series features the world's leading researchers.
The video below goes on for more than 70 minutes. If you want to listen to a clear, concise, explanation of the history of Alzheimer's science dating from 1984 to the present, you can listen all the way.
I strongly suggest that you listen to the first ten minutes. You might be surprised to learn that social isolation (loneliness) is a cause of Alzheimer's. You'll hear Dr. Tanzi mention the combination of Aricept and Namenda as a more effective treatment when taken together, as opposed to taking only one drug -- either/or.
Later in the video, Tanzi also talks about TAU and tangles for fans of this type of research.
In this video, you'll learn that 80 percent of Alzheimer's cases are related to family history.
We all have a genetic makeup. Our genetic makeup does determine our predisposition to Alzheimer's disease. So far, hundreds of genes that predispose to Alzheimer's have been discovered. Each discovery leads to a better understanding of the causes of Alzheimer's.
Tanzi has a vision. To predict Alzheimer's early. Then to discover treatments and therapeutics to stop or slow the development of Alzheimer's in you or in me.
His vision includes the possibility of discovering therapeutics that can slow or stop Alzheimer's much in the same way that statins can lower your cholesterol levels. Lower cholesterol levels can lead to a longer, healthy life.
I admire Dr Tanzi. He is not working in a cave. He is not "hoarding away" his research findings in the hopes of becoming an instant billionaire. He is freely sharing the fruits of his genetic research -- his intellectual capital -- with the scientific community worldwide.
I often ask myself this question -- is he the One?
