They need to know what is coming first so that they don’t think that you are grabbing them.\u003c/li\u003e\u003cli\u003e\u003cb\u003eSpeak calmly.\u003c/b\u003e Always speak in a calm manner with an upbeat tone of voice, even if you don’t feel that way. If you sound angry or agitated, they will often mirror that feeling back to you and then some.\u003c/li\u003e\u003cli\u003e\u003cb\u003eSpeak slowly. \u003c/b\u003e Speak at one half of your normal speed when talking to them. Take a breath between each sentence. They can not process words as fast as non-diseased people can. Give them a chance to catch up to your words.\u003c/li\u003e\u003cli\u003e\u003cb\u003eSpeak in short sentences.\u003c/b\u003e Speak in short direct sentences with only one idea to a sentence. Usually they can only focus on only one idea at a time.\u003c/li\u003e\u003cli\u003e\u003cb\u003eOnly ask one question at a time.\u003c/b\u003e Let them answer it before you ask another question. You can ask who, what, where and when, but NOT why. Why is too complicated. They will try to answer, fail and get frustrated.\u003c/li\u003e\u003cli\u003e\u003cb\u003eDon’t say “remember”.\u003c/b\u003e Many times they will not be able to do so, and you are just pointing out to them their shortcomings. Be inclusive and don’t talking down to them as if they were a child. I had (and still have) a long list of things that I wanted to accomplish. First, was to improve the look and feel of the website and make it easier to navigate. This is ongoing. Keep in mind, I am an older guy and not a \"tech Wiz\". \u003cbr /\u003e\u003cbr /\u003eYou have a \"tech wiz\" in your home maybe they would like to help.\u003cbr /\u003e\u003cbr /\u003eOnce I improved the website I had a second and more important goal. I wanted to \u003cb\u003eunleash the Collective Brain of the Alzheimer's Reading Room.\u003c/b\u003e \u003cbr /\u003e\u003cbr /\u003eFirst, I wanted to increase the number of comments. I continue to believe that comments are one of the most important features on this site. Readers get to share their experience, advice and insight. Readers get an opportunity to support their fellow Alzheimer's caregivers. Importantly, readers get the opportunity to get something off their \"chest\" and interact with others that understand how they might be feeling at any point in time. Collectively, we are getting better and more effective at this. I knew this would be easy because just about everyone out there wants to get their URL on this blog. It might sound ditsy but I am going to say it anyway -- you complete us.\u003cbr /\u003e\u003cbr /\u003eAlong the way, we added some specialist in the field. People that work with their \"hands on\" people that have Alzheimer's disease and dementia. Several of these writers have 20 or more years of experience. Invaluable experience that most people pay to get. Invaluable experience that we would be unlikely to obtain on our own. One word -- Invaluable.\u003cbr /\u003e\u003cbr /\u003eYou might be surprised to learn that the entire spectrum of the Alzheimer's community is represented here. Of course, we have a growing number of \"standing alone\" Alzheimer's caregivers -- like me. One by one the \"standing alone\" continue to find us. \u003cbr /\u003e\u003cbr /\u003eWe have a growing list of Alzheimer's support group moderators. A growing list of people that own businesses or franchises and offer caregiver support to families that need it. We have a growing list of nurses and geriatric care specialists.\u003cbr /\u003e\u003cbr /\u003eThis might surprise you. We have several of the world's most important Alzheimer's scientists and researchers lurking in the background. For the most part, they have not stepped forward to share their insight, advice, and experience with us. After having a beer with his buddies, Dr. Tanzi went back to his office and looked at his list of genes associated with Alzheimer's disease. He noticed that many of the genes looked like genes associated with the so-called innate immune system. He walked into the office of his colleague Robert Moir and mentioned this to him. Moir then handed Tanzi a spreadsheet, it was a comparison of A-beta and a well-known protein of the innate immune system, LL-37. It is too early to tell, and it will be sometime before we know.\u003cbr /\u003e\u003ccenter\u003e___________________________________\u003c/center\u003e\u003cbr /\u003eAlzheimer's disease was first identified by Dr. Alois Alzheimer in 1906. Dr. Alzheimer noticed when he autopsied the brain of his patient, Auguste D, that the brain was riddled with sticky clumps and fibrous tangles. Almost 80 years later in 1984, scientists figured out that those clumps are made of a protein found throughout the body called amyloid. \u003cb\u003eThis discovery gave birth to the amyloid hypothesis, which holds that the accumulation of amyloid plaque in the brain slowly destroys brain cells.\u003c/b\u003e \u003cbr /\u003e\u003cbr /\u003eIn the 1990s scientists began research in earnest to attack beta amyloid. Just recently, a series of experimental drugs that came out of this research have failed, and failed miserably. These include Flurizan, Alzemed, and now Dimebon. The list is long.\u003cbr /\u003e\u003cbr /\u003eI should interject I am not a scientist or a doctor. As a by product of the \u003ca href\u003d\"http://www.alzheimersreadingroom.com\"\u003eAlzheimer's Reading Room\u003c/a\u003e, I read more than 3,000 articles and scientific reports on Alzheimer's disease. I find myself wondering all the time, what came first the chicken or the egg? \u003cbr /\u003e\u003cbr /\u003eThis gets us back to Dr. Tanzi. Back in 2007, Tanzi started work on his project to identify all the genes involved in Alzheimer's. More than 400 families affected by Alzheimer's disease were screened to determine genetic variants associated with the inheritance of Alzheimer's. He received backing for this project from the \u003ca href\u003d\"http://www.blogger.com/www.curealzfund.org\"\u003eCure Alzheimer's Fund.\u003c/a\u003e\u003cbr /\u003e\u003cbr /\u003eNow for Dr. Tanzi and his hypothesis: \u003cbr /\u003e\u003cblockquote\u003e\u003cb\u003eAmyloid-beta protein (A-beta) -- the primary constituent of the plaques found in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients -- may be a normal part of the innate immune system.\u003c/b\u003e\u003c/blockquote\u003eIn layman's terms Dr. Tanzi is hypothesizing that A-beta may be part of the brain’s normal defenses against invading bacteria and other microbes. Why is this important?
