The same can be said of a long list of diseases. \u003cbr /\u003e\u003cbr /\u003eIn the case of Alzheimer's, I am learning that it is not unusual for the personal care physician to act without consulting a specialist. I can only assume that this is caused by the demands of health care providers to keep costs down. Could you imagine a personal care physician trying to treat cancer?\u003cbr /\u003e\u003cbr /\u003eThere are a long list of diseases that can present as dementia. If he hasn't, the doctor might get nervous and decide to do so -- immediately (I think many of you know the reason why).\u003c/b\u003e\u003cbr /\u003e\u003cbr /\u003eHere are two specific examples that I wrote about previously.\u003cbr /\u003e\u003cbr /\u003eThe first included a diagnosis of \u0026nbsp;depression when in fact it was Alzheimer's. \u003cbr /\u003e\u003cbr /\u003e\u003ci\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003ca href\u003d\"http://www.alzheimersreadingroom.com/2007/01/im-45-years-old-i-cant-have-alzheimers.html\"\u003eJames Smith: I'm 46 Years Old, I can't have Alzheimer's\u003c/a\u003e\u003c/b\u003e\u003c/i\u003e\u003cbr /\u003e\u003cbr /\u003eThe second is an example of a man that was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, and finally ten years later was diagnosed with Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH). He came back to life once the correct diagnosis came (see the article within the article). My mother drove her car over a concrete abutement, through a hedge, tore the entire side of her car off, and fortunately came to a stop about six inches from her building. The car was totaled. The stories of similar situations with Alzheimer's caregivers are common.\u003c/blockquote\u003e As the number of person suffering from Alzheimer's increasing due to the aging of population driving is certain to become an issue. An older person will kick and scream before they will allow you to take away their license. Since they have civil rights it might not be easy to get their license revoked.\u003cbr /\u003e\u003cbr /\u003eNew research indicates that doctor's may be able to use cognitive tests to help determine whether a person with Alzheimer's disease is safe behind the wheel and is capable of driving safely. This study found that drivers with Alzheimer's disease committed an average of 42 safety mistakes, or 27 percent more than the drivers without Alzheimer's disease.\u003cbr /\u003e\u003cbr /\u003eI often tell people if I was elected governor of Florida I would try to get legislation passed to recquire persons 80 years of age or  older to take a driving test every year.
