We get more than 20,000 people each month coming to the Alzheimer's Reading Room seeking information about memory tests for Alzheimer's and dementia.

These five tests are self assessment memory test. If you use these tests in your home and you find the results are suspicious you should consult with your personal care physician (PCP). These tests will not give you a definitive diagnosis of Alzheimer's or dementia.
If you are worried after taking one of these test, you should ask your PCP for a referral to a geriatric memory specialist, or neurologist that specializes in dementia. There are many diseases that can present with dementia like symptoms, but that are treatable.
A series of test done by a dementia specialist are necessary before Alzheimer's or another type of dementia can be formally diagnosed.
Most people don't think of this. If you are worried and live near a University you can call and determine if they have a Wellness Center, Memory Center, or an Alzheimer's Disease Research Center. If I had to do it over with Dotty I would have tried this first.
